A lot of us will be looking forward to spending time on a sunny beach in the next few weeks. Some of us will have a little voice, deep in our heads, occasionally coming up with thoughts such as “I am not ready!”, “It would be so much better if I could fit in THAT bikini”, “I wish I had spent longer in the gym” or “It might be OK – if I hide under my sarong no-one will notice me”. Thinking thoughts such as these will have different effects on different people; some will be able to notice the thinking, question how helpful it is to them, decide the thoughts are untrue or unhelpful and be in a position to dismiss them. Others, will think these thoughts and really get tangled in them. Dwelling on thoughts such as these can lead to feelings of inadequacy, worry, anxiety and stress – not quite the feelings you want to be jetting off with on holiday!
